Heading home through the Time Warner Center I met Kerry McGinnis, kennel manager at the Humane Society of New York. Kerry’s standing in front of a massive photo of herself that’s part of an exhibition of 9/11 photographs. In the weeks after the attack, Kerry escorted evacuees to their apartments to rescue their pets: “Some said, ‘why bother? There’s more important work.’ But these animals are parts of families. People would call their children on cell phones to let them know the cat was safe. Many had lost neighbors and colleagues. They didn’t need to lose family, too.”
Hard to make out, but that was our view of the NYC fireworks over the Hudson River, as seen from a moving car on the BQE. Looked like a pretty amazing show, even from our vantage point. That’s Union Square to the left, Empire in red, white and blue at the center, and Chrysler on the right. And my passenger mirror. Hope you all had an amazing 4th of July.
Robin Hood Foundation: Hi, Tumblr.
Poverty in New York City is so pervasive it’s almost inconceivable.
1.8 million people who live in New York City live in poverty. That’s almost one in five people. 1.4 million New Yorkers rely on emergency food to survive, and 38,000 sleep in homeless shelters each night.
For 20 years, Robin…
